Using Technology to Bridge the Gaps in Uganda’s Education Ecosystem

Hive Colab is a community of innovators, founders, creatives and problem solvers who are shaping Uganda’s digital future from within our co-working space. Through the Hive Community Spotlight series on our YouTube and as a blog, we shine a light on the inspiring individuals building impactful solutions right here at the Hive.

This week, we feature Peter Kato Maani, Co-Founder and Marketing Director of SchoolPal, an innovative tool working to transform education management through technology specifically designed for the Ugandan ecosystem.

1. A brief introduction about yourself and what you do

Hello, I’m Peter Kato Maani - marketer by day, entrepreneur by passion. With over 15 years of driving growth in products and services, I am now the Co-Founder and Marketing Director at SchoolPal, where we're revolutionising school-education management to make learning more accessible and effective.

When I'm not shaping the future of education, you can find me founding Tooro Lifestyle Magazine or tending to my farm - because sometimes, the best ideas come from getting your hands in the soil.

2. What inspired you to start SchoolPal, and how did your personal experiences influence the vision behind the platform?

The vision for SchoolPal was born out of a personal experience during the 2021 COVID-19 lockdown. As a parent, I found myself navigating the challenges of homeschooling my children, struggling to access learning materials, and seeking guidance from teachers remotely. It was frustrating to see my kids fall behind on their learning curve due to limited access to resources.

This sparked an idea - what if there was a platform that could bridge the gap between parents, teachers, and learners? A space where parents could easily connect with teachers, access learning materials, and stay updated on their child's progress.

What started as a solution to a personal problem has evolved into a platform that's now serving a broader community. SchoolPal has designed a product called Schoolix to support parents, teachers, and learners, fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning environment.

I'm excited to see how Schoolix can continue to grow and make a positive impact on education.

3. What unique challenges have you faced in developing and scaling an education management tool in Uganda, and how have you navigated them?

Limited internet access and infrastructure is a big challenge in Uganda, as many areas often have poor connectivity, making it hard for users to access platforms like ours. To address this, we're incorporating features that work offline and sync data when a connection is available.

Low digital literacy is another hurdle, especially in rural areas, where users struggle with digital tools and require extra support. We've designed the platform to be super user-friendly, and we offer comprehensive training to school staff and parents. Plus, we provide support resources, training, and user manuals to help them get comfortable.

As for limited resources and funding, developing and maintaining a product like ours is costly, and our subscription fee, although affordable, can be a barrier for some. To tackle this, we're exploring partnerships with organisations and the private sector for funding and resources, and we're working on flexible pricing models to make it more accessible.

4. What makes SchoolPal’s approach unique?

Our approach is unique because Schoolix is built from the ground up with the Ugandan education ecosystem in mind. Unlike global solutions that might not fully grasp local nuances, we've tailored our platform to address specific challenges faced by Ugandan schools, parents, and students.

Our focus is on inclusivity and accessibility – we've designed an interface that's user-friendly for educators, parents, and students, even with limited digital literacy. We're also emphasising offline functionality and mobile-first design, recognising that many users rely on smartphones with intermittent internet.

What sets us apart is our commitment to collaboration - we're working closely with local educators, schools, and communities to ensure Schoolix meets their needs and adapts to Uganda's diverse curricula.

5. How do you balance technological innovation with accessibility?

We prioritise accessibility at SchoolPal, recognising that many schools in Uganda face resource constraints. Our platform is designed to be mobile-first, as many users access it via smartphones, so it's fast, intuitive, and data-efficient.

We've also incorporated offline functionality, allowing users to access key features even without internet - data syncs when they're back online. For schools with slower connections, we've optimised features to work seamlessly in low-bandwidth mode.

To further increase accessibility, we offer a mobile app specifically for teachers. They can manage classes, track attendance, and communicate with parents directly from their phones. Students can access learning materials, submit assignments, and track their progress. Parents receive notifications via the app or email whenever homework or projects are assigned.

We also provide comprehensive training and support to schools, parents, and teachers, ensuring they get the most out of Schoolix. Our team is always on hand to help with setup, troubleshooting, and any questions.

It's about using tech to solve real problems, not just adding features for the sake of it. We're committed to making Schoolix a tool that's genuinely useful for Ugandan schools.

6. Looking ahead, what big problem in education are you most passionate about solving next?

One big problem in education that we're super passionate about solving is the lack of personalized learning for students, especially in large classes with limited teacher support.

Schoolix has an AI-powered feature that's being trained daily to be a game-changer for students. Our AI will analyse each student's learning patterns, strengths, and weaknesses and create personalised learning paths - like a smart tutor that adapts to how each child learns best.

This means students get targeted support, practice, and resources - even if their teacher is busy. Parents also get insights into how their child is doing and where they might need extra help.

As Schoolix grows, we'll keep refining this AI to tackle other challenges like early grade reading levels, numeracy skills, and support for students with disabilities. It's an exciting journey, and we're just getting started.

7. Leadership lessons as a founder

As a founder, one big lesson I have learned is that trust is everything. Building trust means being transparent, responsive, and delivering on promises.

With schools and parents, it's about showing we understand their challenges and are committed to solving real problems - not just selling a product. We listen, involve them in development, and ensure their voices are heard.

With the team, trust is about empowerment, openness, and creating a culture where everyone feels valued. When people trust you, they're more invested - and that's when magic happens.

For founders, focus on building genuine relationships and always prioritise the people you're serving - that's where real growth happens.
